Eclipse or NetBeans?!

If you don’t know, but my graduation project will be in Java, and I thought about an IDE to use and for sure I ended up with the two mighties, Eclipse and NetBeans, I have been reading for some time, but I can feel it’s a 50-50 feedback for both IDEs and mostly it depends on how long does one submitting his feedback use the IDE. So, I thought I might run a simple poll for Java developers to see what do they prefer, and the most important thing is why?!

For Java Development, what do you prefer, Eclipse or NetBeans?

  1. for sometime I used to use netbeans and after working with eclipse for 6 months now I assure that eclipse is alot faster and more customizable and has lots and lots of really cool plugins.

I really prefer eclipse now and I use it for C++/Java/Python and I’m really happy with its performance compared to the turtle-slow netbeans.

  2. actually i prefer Eclipse, for the same reasons that Ahmed mentioned …

and about the Eclipse on Ubuntu, i know a friend who’s using “Easy Eclipse” on ubuntu, i dunno much about it, but he says it is wonderful :)

I have been upgrading the one I have to 3.4.2 and I think it faster than the previous one!

I have never heard of Easy Eclipse before, may be I can give it a try..

Actually, I’m not an eclipse fan, but to be honest my relation with eclipse was only within my experience with BEA Workspace which is an eclipse based IDE. But from that experience I found the following:

1- Eclipse needs alot of configurations & plugins before considering it as a stable development environment, but for netbeans you can download the complete kit which you will find it almost enough to start designing, coding, script preparing, and debuging.
2- Regarding text editing (Smart text editing) I couldn’t find much differences between both, except performance (Eclipse is faster than Netbeans in code guessing & smart API code completion).
3- If we are talking here about IDE plugins development, then I’m sure you will find Netbeans plugin development very interesting. I had an experience & it was very interesting development platform. I’m not sure about eclipse regarding that.
4- Netbeans has the advantage that it’s truly the best Swing Application maker ever, and the only efficient MIDlet maker too. But on the other hand eclipse has the advantage of Swing, hibernate, camel, hussien, etc.. platforms support (Open-source Java Stack, not Sun Java Stack, EJBs, JPA, and so on).

That was all I could remember for now. But that was the answer for your question but I have a suggestion for much better IDE which is IntelliJ IDEA
which is the most effecient Java IDE I ever used. I can truly ensure that it has all of the previous advantages. But if you any problem with your conscience & you don’t face a problem with using cracked software :) then you will be able to use it as it’s not a freeware IDE (It’s only open-source).

And the last advice I have right now is, know what’s the type of development you will perform (Standalone, Desktop, Text Based, Web, Enterprise, Mobile, or Scripting) then judge on the IDE regarding this type not generally.

Good Luck, & I miss you all

And finally Support your favorite IT organization & technology vendor SUN, and use it’s products, Open-Solaris, Java Platforms, Netbeans IDE, Glassfish Application Server. Oracle will stop running Netbeans, JavaFX projects to pass the crisis, don’t give them a chance.

Etbara3 we law be geneh :)

I was really happy when I saw you comments, really I miss you Samer :)

I read it carefully, and one really thing that got my eyes, was “And the last advice I have right now is, know what’s the type of development you will perform (Standalone, Desktop, Text Based, Web, Enterprise, Mobile, or Scripting) then judge on the IDE regarding this type not generally.” We are going to do the it in JSP and hence I think NetBeans can really help here.

About the Oracle and Sun issue, I really can’t imagine how can they stop such neat and really cool products except they are going to give more cool ones!

        • Samer Gad says:

Bingo, if you are going to do it through JSP I don’t think you will find Netbeans interesting specially in JSP development :D
If I were you, I would consider the development environment & IDE for the application server that I’ll work with. For example if I’m going to use Websphere then I’d use Rational, Glassfish then Netbeans, BEA Weblogic, BEA Workspace will be much better choice, and so on.

Look I can recommend Glassfish + Netbeans for light development but you won’t find enough support for JSP in Netbeans code editor & there’s no HTML visual design pallets in NEtbeans. You will drag & drop into text (HTML) page :D. For myself the last time I developed a web component was about 1 year ago but I used to find BEA Weblogic & its workspace very interesting specially its JPF framework which is Struts (Controller & Action) based framework, which will simplify your development process.

          • or maybe you would prefer JBoss (Which I prefer) then you use eclipse or RHDS (RedHat Developer Studio – Based on Eclipse)

          • bingorabbit says:

            LOTS of options here! :D

So, NetBeans is not very good with JSP development! I started to get lost :D, but I will start searching in each of these terms and see what I may end up with! :D

In general I prefer eclipse for some reasons.
              Eclipse is faster than netbeans.
NetBeans tends to bundle up important plugins so that you can use them easily but I can see eclipse as platform in which you can install and configure new plugins and you have a wide range of options available in eclipse.
Also eclipse has plugins to use it for other languages like python, php, C and C++ not only java.

But I prefer netbeans in swing and JSP applications .
I think in eclipse you have to do more setting up and configuration.

With netbeans u can do everything from scratch to the end without understanding 75% of technologies that u r using . every thing u can do it with visual design .
I think it is good for the beginners to start with netbeans but without its plug-ins and visual design or he will never learn any thing .
not always eclipse faster and also not always netbeans slower .
    thanks ibrahem
